Cyclone Tracy- When and Where
Cyclone Tracy was first recorded by the United states ESSA 8 Environmental Satellite on the 20th of December as a large cloud mass near the centre of latitude 8° and longitude of 135°, over the Arafura Sea, 370 kilometres north-east of the capital of the Northern Territory, Darwin. Over the course of a few days, the tropical cyclone moved in a south-westernly direction, posing no immediate threat to Darwin. However, in the early morning of the 24th, the cyclone changed course and headed straight for the capital.
