Cyclone Tracy- Social and Environmental Impacts
Cyclone Tracy wrecked havoc in Darwin, Northern Territory. It killed 71 people, damaged 56 aircrafts at Darwin airport and destroyed communication to the outside within the span of 5 hours. The water supplies were contaminated as sewerage lines were damaged, resulting in a lack of sanitation and poison leak to the environment, causing a fear of disease breaking out.
There was a food shortage along with no fresh, clean water to drink, contributing to the fear of diseases. Buildings and homes were destroyed, leaving 41,000 out of 47,000 people in Darwin homeless.
Many organisations helped with the disaster and $250 million dollars was donated to Darwin. The organisations that helped included Darwin's Emergency Service, QANTAS, National Disasters Organisation, US Airforce and Darwin's Reconstruction Committee. Other parts of Australia donated money, food, clothing, building materials, blankets and medical supplies.
